You can design great new flies – Murray’s Fly Shop – When the fish just will not take the flies there is a tendency to think…”If I had a fly that would match what these fish are feeding on I could catch them.” Actually you can design and tie great new flies that will work.
Here are some basic steps that will help you undertake your fly tying endeavors.
1. Evaluate the successful flies designed by the master fly anglers. Gentlemen such as Ed Shenk, Dan Bailey and Vince Marinaro have all given us great flies.
2. Inspect the natural foods the fish are feeding upon.
3. Study the fly tying materials available from which you can tie your new fly.
4. Tie up 5 new flies all of which are slightly different, take these to the stream and fish with them and record your success with each one.
5. Back at your tying bench incorporate the components of the most successful patterns into your new fly and you probably have a winner.
