Calendar Blog- Murray’s Fly Shop- Edinburg, Virginia
The large calendar on my kitchen wall is a very important part of my angling. This includes both trout and bass. This is locally and for distant trout trips.
At this time of the year, before I dispose of last years calendar, I transfer the important angling information to my new calendar. This helps me plan my upcoming angling trips and local fishing. This refreshes my memory of exciting fishing my son and I have had over the past fifteen to twenty years.
In order to keep this information accurate for local fishing, I make notes on my new calendar as soon as I get home from fishing. This includes the stream and specific sections I fished, the stream temperature and stream level. I also include water clarity, specific aquatic insect hatches and how heavy they were at the time of the day I was fishing. Lastly I include the effective flies and techniques and any unusual things that occurred that influenced my fishing.
The information I record when I get back from a two or three week long trip is more general. It still captures the information I need for planning future trips. This always includes where I found the best fishing and where I encountered the poorest fishing. This includes the hatches, tactics and any specific information that will help me plan my future trips.
As I peruse my old calendar today it helps take the winter-chill from my thinking when I see information there that shows it may not be long until I can expect to get some good fishing.
