The late Charlie Brooks of West Yellowstone, MT showed me a great casting trick which I named the “Brooks Lob” which is a big help when using my “Sweeping a Streamer” and “Swing Nymphing” techniques. With both of these methods the flies are allowed to drift deeply downstream until they are almost straight downstream from you. The “Brooks Lob” simplifies casting these heavy flies back upstream.
With the fly hanging downstream I make sure I’m tight on it with my line hand and that the rod is pointing straight down the line. Next I turn my rod hand palm-up and make a new cast up and across stream with one motion. This is an easy cast to master and it simplifies the fly presentation to the precise spot you want it.
