The Best Five Flies for Late Season Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing

The Best Five Flies for Late Season Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing- Murray’s Fly Shop- Edinburg, Virginia. Fly Fishing Virginia.

Each year we find that we can often catch many large bass in October and November. We can do this by selecting our flies carefully and fishing them deeply in protected feeding stations.

Here are my five best flies for late season smallmouth bass fly fishing:

(1) Murray’s Crayfish size 6
(2) Murray’s Heavy Black Hellgrammite size 4
(3) Murray’s Magnum Hog Sucker Streamer size 4
(4) Murray’s Black Madtom Sculpin Streamer size 4
(5) Murray’s Skunk Road Kill Nymph size 6

My most productive feeding stations are the deep pools and deep back eddies. In order to fish my flies slowly along the streambottom in these areas I use a fast Sinking Head Line Fly Line. This sinks at 4 to 8 IPS.  The Scientific Anglers Sonar Sink 30 Warm Tip Fly Line in 200 grains is excellent for getting my flies deeply. My standard leader with these fly lines are the Murray’s Fluorocarbon 6 foot 2X Sinking Line Leader.
