My Five Favorite Flies for High Water on Mountain Trout Streams

My Five Favorite Flies for High Water on Mountain Trout Streams

To find good trout fishing in the mountain streamsĀ  after a week of rain, I go into the heads of the streams from the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. I hike down a mile, then fish my way back up the mountain. Nymphs are very effective now. I use the Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 12, Murray’s Professor Nymph size 14, Murray’s Dark Miracle Stonefly Nymph size 12, Murray’s Magic Tan Caddis Pupa size 12 and Mr. Rapidan Brown Soft Hackle Nymph size 12. I fish these all flies on Murray’s Trout Nymph 9 foot Leader. I rely strongly on these built in indicators to detect my strikes.

Smallmouth and Trout… Fishing Galore!

Fishing Report: The local trout streams are all in great shape. Hike down from the Skyline Drive or Blue Ridge Parkway for your best water levels on the native Brook Trout streams. The local smallmouth streams are all in great shape. Fishing has been good, bring a sink tip fly line a heavy streamers since the rivers are still full. Floating is your best bet if you have access to a canoe, boat, kayak or something that will suffice.
The Fly Shop will be closed on Memorial Day…. I’m going fishing!! So give me a call Saturday to get the information on where to go and what to use.
