My Five Favorite Flies for High Water on Mountain Trout Streams

My Five Favorite Flies for High Water on Mountain Trout Streams

To find good trout fishing in the mountain streamsĀ  after a week of rain, I go into the heads of the streams from the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. I hike down a mile, then fish my way back up the mountain. Nymphs are very effective now. I use the Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 12, Murray’s Professor Nymph size 14, Murray’s Dark Miracle Stonefly Nymph size 12, Murray’s Magic Tan Caddis Pupa size 12 and Mr. Rapidan Brown Soft Hackle Nymph size 12. I fish these all flies on Murray’s Trout Nymph 9 foot Leader. I rely strongly on these built in indicators to detect my strikes.

Scientific Anglers Indicators

The Scientific Anglers Indicators are extremely valuable to the smallmouth angler. After showing the students on the stream in my smallmouth schools how to properly use these, their statement is frequently, “I can’t believe how much difference they make”.

Placing one in the butt of my Bright Butt Knotted Leader and one in the next strand down they:
1-Enable you to see if your fly is swinging properly in the current where you want it.
2-Help you see if you are getting the depth you need.
3-Detect the strikes.
