Safe Wading

Wading large fast rivers can be difficult and even dangerous so it is wise to use a wading staff. However, here is a trick my guide taught me in Montana years ago that helps if I don’t have my wading staff. When wading across a big river ones balance becomes very critical. In order to help steady yourself hold your fly rod by the grip in your downstream hand. With that arm fully extended point the fly rod straight downstream with just the tip of the rod resting on the surface of the river. As you wade across the stream just keep the rod tip delicately touching on the stream surface. You will be amazed how this helps your balance.
